Wednesday 23rd-Saturday 26th: Some studying and other stuff

I had a great time in Finland but it made me a bit tired and I also felt like I should do some studying sometime. I had a Topics in Scientific Computing (numerical methods) assignment due on Friday, and a Linear Analysis assignment due on Monday. So I decided that I should read through the few weeks of lectures I was behind on and get these done, and also catch up on some sleep.

Wednesday:
I spent a few hours with my calligraphy pen writing out notes on numerical methods. Last year I did a course on this topic where the lecturer was really not very good. The maths was explained by vague hand waving and rough scribbles on the board. This course is much better. I'm very happy to find that this maths makes sense and is not the ridiculous mystery that it was last year.

In the evening I went to the science fiction movie night. They showed Monsters vs Robots. At first I thought it was very lame. The jokes were fairly forced non-jokes. However it got better and I thought it was genuinely entertaining after about 1/4 of the way through. I enjoyed it.

Thursday:
I missed a few lectures in the morning due to still being tired, but made it to the ones in the afternoon. It seems that I'm not really that far behind. In the evening I continued working on the numerical methods assignment. I'm making some good progress. It's good. Quite a productive studying day.

Friday:
I had to print some matlab plots for the assignment and then I got it handed in. I think I did a good job on the assignment. I'm happy about it. I celebrated this by starting the linear analysis assignment. I made some good progress on this as well. Linear Analysis is like the second half of the second year algebra course at adelaide, except with infinite sequences, more general spaces (Hilbert, Banach), the vectors or elements seem to often be functions, and the proofs are slightly more rigorous. It is really good because I think I have proven some of the things already in the algebra course at adelaide, or at least have thought about it a lot, so the intuitive understanding is well developed.

Saturday:
I had another good sleep. The last few nights I have been aiming to have a proper amount of sleep. I'm enjoying it. I had another day of doing homework, since it is due on monday and on sunday I know that I am going rambling. I made some really good progress. A lot of learning was done. In the evening Frederic sent me a facebook message saying they were in the games room playing fussball. I joined them in there. Matthias and I played some pool on the terribly out of shape table. The white ball is gone, so the 8 ball is the replacement. The aim of the game is now to hit any ball into a pocket, keeping count, with highest score winning. In one of the corner pockets there is a 2-3 x 10 cm strip of material missing. If the ball gets stuck in that shoot while heading toward the hole, then it gets diverted and almost certainly won't go in.
