I woke up feeling fairly terrible. I love that camera, and I'm so annoyed that I was so careless to leave it. The odds of me seeing it again were lower than I'd like. I hadn't heard anything back from the people from the rambling society so I decided to email the bus company to see if they could look into it, or at least to see if they had a lost property system.
A little while later I got an email from someone at ramsoc (rambling society) saying that Liz (who is also a mathematician. Disproprotionate number of mathematicians in ramsoc...) had called them, and that..... they have it! I would just need to go pick it up. This was incredible news. My spirits lifted by lots. I listened to a very funky song to celebrate.
I went to get lunch in the portland building. The usual. Then had a linear analysis lecture. We're into the second part of the module now so we've changed lecturers. We have Dr Joel Feinstein now. Others have told me that he's really good. He seems alright.
Next I had Topics in Scientific Computing. We got our assignment back today. 25/25, sweet! 10% of my mark too. In the lecture we moved to a new topic that looks really interesting: Spectral Methods. This is a different kind of method to solve a differential equation where the function is unknown. We have just briefly dipped into what it might involve, but it seems like an alternative to using Taylor series of functions to determine the approximating algorithm. Instead, I think we will find functions which form some kind of basis for a subspace of the space in which the true function exists, and then project the true function onto the subspace. It involves some theory of Hilbert spaces and using inner products. I'm really interested to know why they are called spectral methods. I have some theories.
I went home and then had dinner. After dinner I checked the mail room and found that my package had finally arrived from ebay! 35 refills for my calligraphy pen. Hooray, now I can continue writing out the module notes.
After dinner I did a bunch of homework with the calligraphy pen. The day went from terrible to awesome. It is good. I also got about 12 hours sleep the previous night due to going to sleep really early. Hooray.
