On Sunday I had a very big sleep-in. I think I spent most of the day working out some future travelling plans and doing a little bit of homework.
I had been invited to watch a movie but it turned out they were watching Four Weddings and a Funeral, not really something that interests me. But then Matthias let me know that they were having a few drinks at the Rose and Crown pub. So I decided to go there. I was going to meet up with Paolo first and walk there with him since he lives in the same hall as me. But he didn't arrive so I had to go without him. It turned out that his friend had been in a car accident. It was pretty serious but thankfully he was alright.
At the pub I met a few of Matthias's friends. There is Frederic from the south-west of France. I forgot the exact city. And three girls I can't remember the names of who were all from Germany. Charlotte was there as well. She knows these people independently. Charlotte is the girl from Holland who also lives at the hall I live in.
We had a nice night. Drank some beer. I think I was a bit tired though, and I didn't know the people all that well. The pub has to stop selling beer at 11pm, and the shop across the road was closed. The others were interested in getting a little more beer and going back to one of their houses, but with the shop closed there was no where to go for that, so we decided to all go home.
The others headed to their houses and Charlotte and I walked back together.
Monday 7th February:
This day I had a few lessons. I was a bit concerned that I'd not prepared my linear analysis questions in a well written way to be handed up. But I had done the logic in messy scribbles and it is not assessed. I asked the lecturer and he didn't seem to fussed about collecting them.
I had my lessons and then went home and did some homework. This night was an anime series/movie night with the sci fi club I joined. I had not been to one of these before so I decided to go to it.
My impression of the anime night was not very good. The room was very smelly. I don't know if it was the people or the room. The people all spoke in a loud, yelling, stereotypical nerd-ish way. Very grating to my ears. I know it is possible to like anime and not be a loud annoying person, but the stereotype often supports itself.
I watched a few episodes, but they were already some way into the series so it didn't make much sense to me. I left after three episodes, and was glad to have fresh air again.
Tuesday 8th:
This day I had four lectures of one hour each. I made it to all the lectures and learnt lots of interesting stuff.
During dinner Charlotte told me that Matthias and his friends were meeting again to have some drinks. I decided to go along with them. Tonight is supposed to be a regular weekly time where international and exchange students can meet with each other. So that's sort of why we were going.
We were all fairly confused about when it was supposed to start. We thought 8:30, so we were going to leave at 8. But then at 7:40 someone realised they were meeting at 7:30, so Charlotte, Paolo and I met at 7:50 and then walked there.
We had a few drinks at the Rose and Crown. They love Foster's beer here. I think it is okay too. But I should stop drinking it and instead try some local stuff. I had a kronenburg beer as well. I had some nice conversations with Frederic, Paolo, Charlotte and Matthias, about music, and a bunch of other stuff. They are nice people. Frederic wants me to play basketball with them, although I haven't really played basketball. I might give it a shot.
There were also some other girls from Germany (some from the previous night, and some I hadn't met before), but they were on the other side of the table so I only got to speak with them a little bit.
After they stopped serving drinks at 11 we decided to walk to another place which can serve drinks until later. While we were at this pub we were confused because only one other exchange student showed up. He was from France, and he fell in with our group a bit.
When we got there and bought some more beer I was asked to provide some age verification. I'm supposed to have a passport, but the lady accepted my Australian driver's licence.
I played two matches of fussball even after I confessed my complete lack of skill at the game. I was the defensive half. Luckily my teammate, Marion, from Austria, is very good. We won both games.
I had some good conversations with most people. Charlotte has dyscalculia and is very good at languages. She read Lord of the Rings at age 12 or so. With english being her second language, I am very impressed.
We were far from home and it was raining, so Paolo, Charlotte and I decided to get a taxi home. Divided between us it was less than 1.5 pounds. Really cheap I think.
